Do Wiccans Worship the Devil?
Even though it has been answered a million times, we will continue to answer it again and again until we are all blue in the face. Then people will wonder why Wiccans are always blue.
The following article I wrote for Helium addresses the usual misconceptions about Wicca:
- Satanic Ritual Abuse, or Satanic Panic
- Devil worship (the lack thereof)
- All Wiccans are not women
- Evil spells
- Fluffy bunnnies
Why do people leave their dog in a hot car?
While I was walking to work this morning I passed a car and noticed a dog inside. Who could be so stupid? It was just after 10 a.m. and already the temperature on the bank clock was at 89 degrees. Inside a car the temperature is even hotter.
I called the police and asked them if there was anything they could do, and they said they would send someone over. I waited at the car and kept on eye on the dog.
About 10 minutes later the owners of the car walked up and asked me what was going on. I told them they can’t leave their dog like that so they had to wait here because the police were on their way.
The police arrived moments later and what happened next had me so pissed off I was steaming for hours afterwards. The cop walks up to us and the couple start COMPLAINING that “this lady said we’re not allowed to leave the dog in the car” and then starting whining that it is no big deal because they just went to have breakfast and they parked in the shade and they left the window open a crack and it isn’t even hot out yet…
That is when I cut them off and told them that it is already 89 degrees “officially” on the bank clock, it is clearly hotter than that here on the street (Washington Ave is HOT), and it is MUCH hotter inside a parked car with no A.C. and explained that the temperature inside a car rises quickly. Every year dogs die from this stupidity.
The cop just shrugged and said, “So it’s done now, right?” and said they could go. I wanted to punch him right in the face.
Anyone who leaves a dog in the car like that should be forced to put on a fur coat and sit in that same heat for 20 minutes, which is at least how much time the dog was trapped in the car. Then come back and tell me it’s no big deal.
Aren’t there any laws for this? Or is it only after the dog dies that it is finally considered cruelty to animals? Kind of late to act at that point.
LOL! Margaret and Helen – my two new heroines
Margaret and Helen. Best friends for sixty years and counting.
This is Helen’s rant on the bigotry, lies and deception coming from the Republican Right.
Harold isn’t Muslim. He’s Catholic. I’m Methodist. Somehow we’ve managed to live peacefully married for 57 years. We didn’t get married in the church. As far as I am concerned that was no great loss. A short ceremony meant I got to eat cake sooner.
And just like Harold, Barack Hussein Obama isn’t a Muslim either… unless of course you attend a McCain rally where they think he’s either Muslim, a terrorist sympathizer, or not a United States citizen. Most recently they are calling him a socialist. They probably think that is some type of religion too. Smart ones those McCain supporters. One week they want to beat him up for something Rev. Wright said and the next week they want to hate him for being Muslim. For crying out loud people, he’s Christian. But exactly what would be the issue if he were a Muslim?…

An Open Letter to All Republicans From a Former Religious Right Activist
This open letter written by Frank Shaeffer, one of the people responsible for the rise of the Religious Right in the United States, explains why the current Republican party is no longer serving the needs of many good Americans who self identify as Republican.
Dear Republicans:
This election all Republicans who love America must vote for Obama. A vote for business-as-usual and a continuation of the Neoconservative/Religious Right/ party of corporate American alienation is a vote against America. As a former Republican activist, I appeal to your patriotism and honor.
Unless you haven’t been paying attention to the recent history of the Republican Party you will know that today Republican ideology and energy is derived from three sources:
* The Religious Right,
* The Neoconservative Movement,
* Corporate business interests.
You also should know that when it comes to the Religious Right my late father and evangelist, Francis Schaeffer, was the intellectual voice that made it happen. As his young sidekick (in the 70s and 80s) I helped take his message to a huge evangelical audience.
I mention this by way of saying that even if you hate my guts — for having dropped out of the Republican Party, for writing novels that make fun of you, and for reregistering as an independent voter, let alone for supporting Senator Obama — perhaps you should listen up. I happen to know what I’m talking about.

The debate will go on
I am happy to hear that Senator McCain will attend the debate tonight. I was worried that if Senator Obama was the only one to show up someone out there might claim the media coverage was one-sided.
Now I don’t have to worry.
I will try to watch the debate online at CNN.com. I believe everyone else in the nation will be watching on their television set, one of which I personally do not own. The only times I miss not having a TV are the times when something really important is on, like a presidential debate or a Ricky Martin performance. Thank the gods for Internet.
